Captain Marvel
I should start this review by staying I am in no way, shape, or form an expert on Marvel Films, their Universe or anything remotely involving comics. And even though my citizenship to Wakanda is real and runs directly through my veins, I would be lying if I said I really have a full understanding of the complex universe that is Marvel World. I am, however, a lover of films. Good ones, and bad ones. This was a good film.
Without giving away spoilers, here is my take on Captain Marvel.
First, and foremost, the number of people who don't know the difference between "Captain Marvel" and "Captian Marvel" makes me question our entire school system. PAY TEACHERS MORE, your son is dumb Susan.
1. I love a strong female lead. It was refreshing to have a woman, be strong, sarcastic, and completely devoid of a romantic storyline for an entire film. Like, I saw her in me. Her unwavering need to just get to the bottom of the bs was what I found to be her strongest point. She didn't cry, call out for the help of a man, and never once needed to prove anything to anyone but herself. I imagine there is a world out there where woman are able to be that strong without it making someone uncomfortable or being called difficult in the process... I have yet to find that utopia, but I pray to one day.
2. The supporting cast of characters really made this movie for me. Number 1, who knew Jude Law was out here still fine. Aside from the colored contacts, he looks good. Never would have pictured him in this type of movie, but I wasn't mad at it.
Sam Jackson remains one of the best humans on this planet. Whenever he is on screen, I just feel like I am watching an uncle. He's funny, and more importantly, helps to really tie up some Marvel Universe moments that had me shook. Again, they are all probably basic af, but ya girl knows NOTHING so I was SOLD.
An absolute stand out for me is Lashana Lynch who plays Maria. If in your life you don't find yourself a down a** friend like her, what are you even living for. I loved her 90s Toni Braxton hair cut. I loved how READY she was when the time came. I loved the little girl who played her daughter Monica, and how perfectly cast and witty she was. I loved how their friendship was written and how honest it read on screen. Honestly, who doesn't want a total hardass black woman as a friend? All of you do, be real.
Honorable mention to Gemma Chan, simply because she is stunning, even when she is blue. Annette Bening because where did she come from, and also, she still has it. Djimon Hounsou for still being an African King. And that cat, because... literally a HERO. you will see...
As for the film as a whole. I thought what this movie did absolutely right was fill my retro heart with all of the 90s vibes The references were spot on. The clothing. THE MUSIC. THE MUSIC WAS PERFECTION. From CD- Roms to dial-up internet, it didn't miss a beat keeping me in my entire No Doubt 1995 bag. I stan for one of my favorite time periods ever, and it had everyone in the audience laughing because we remember like we remember, REMEMBER.
All of the typical Marvel moments were there as well. Fight scenes that seem pretty realistic for a single woman to carry out. They were not overdone or just too much. Humor, that brought the cackle I needed. A plot twist that had me scratching my bundles.
Now, to the haters. Its being reported that a basket of limp... minded males are heading to the internet to write awful reviews of this film. They do not like the fact that Cap Marvel is quick-witted, smart, sarcastic and dare I say a woman. To that I say, Jim Bob, come out from your mother's basement and search immediately for a clue. It's 2019, and yes, there are dope female leads in the Marvel Universe, as well as the real universe. I know this concept is new for you, seeing as though thee only woman you interact with is your mom, when she brings your fish sticks down with a glass of warm milk each day, but to just drag a movie because it has a girl is so late. Get a clue. Yes, people have the right to their own opinions, but you Garrett, are wrong, and the crumbs that sit between your chin and your potbelly are the proof. BYE.
All in all, I'm into it. I had the pleasure of sitting next to a woman and her daughter who was about 5 or 6, and she was the reason I loved it so much. I loved her watching Brie on screen, reacting and her mother telling her she could totally be that cool one day. Her mother and jamming out to No Doubt and TLC, laughing with each other, and feeling the same moment of, women are 100% cooler than everything else walking this planet was dope. The movie is entertaining, and for nothing else, support it the way you support the rest of the films in the universe. Brie Larson was not my first choice, (and apparently, she wasn't Marvel's either), but she did her thing. I enjoyed it, and am excited for what's next in the world of Marvel.
Carol Danvers did the damn thing. She was everything I needed, and unexpectedly more than I bargained for. Lesson here? Keep finding out the truth for yourself ladies, that's the only way to do it. Also, get yourself some good friends. Like real good. You never know when you will need them!
ALSO, stop leaving before the end credits finish. JUST STOP. Stan Lee did not dedicate his life to these comic books for you to disrespect him and leave every single time. I am sick of it!
Ok. Bye.
*sing* Heeeey wait a minute Mr. Postman...
