F*ck Your Bad Day #StopAsianHate
Now I’m annoyed. A REALLY BAD DAY? He was having a really bad day?
Racism is not a really bad day. Mass shootings? Also, not a really bad day.
A bad day is spilling your coffee in your car. 2 points if it's extra hot.
A bad day is your little purse dog Marshmallow pissing on your carpet.
A bad day is getting a fun-size pack of Starburst and it's only yellow and orange.
A bad day is doing a parade with a newbie who doesn’t know their number.
A bad day… is a paper cut.
Mass shootings are NOT a bad day, You are not the star of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. You are a grown man, who, gun in hand made a choice, to cause violence and take the lives of unexpecting people.
Do you know who had a REALLY bad day yesterday? The people he murdered.
Here’s the thing, words still mean things, folks. I know, if you are new here, I say that a lot, but it bears worth repeating. So, when the former president of the United States, for example, makes jokes about an entire continent of people based on the origin of a worldwide virus, you are both figuratively and literally putting a target on people’s backs. And while I found Mr. Trump entertaining, he was not hosting Saturday Night Live for the last four years. Some things aren’t funny, especially when they come out of the Cheeto stained mouth of the leader of the free world. All he had to do, was be racist in private like all the rest if you do, but he just couldn’t do that. He lit a fire of hate under this country’s ass and watched from his ivory tower as it burned. The truth is, the pandemic only relit the match, but this is not new for the Asian community.
The thing about America is, what makes us unique is that the diversity we built this country on the backs of is also the exact thing so many of you cannot stand. When the targeted hate was happening just to Black folks, it was easy to turn an eye. We resisted. We took a knee. We protested. We were loud. We brought it on ourselves, right?
So now what exactly is the excuse now for how you are treating the AAPI community? A bad day? A virus? Or is it, what’s it called again? Oh, racism. Or is it bigotry? Intolerance? Prejudice?
This is America. Land of the targeted Asian American attacks over a virus, home of the “if you would just wear your mask in Trader Joe’s Karen this whole thing could wrap up a lot faster”.
This is America. Where kneeling for the national anthem is bad, but walking into a business, church, or elementary school, and shooting to kill is ok, but only when someone is having a bad day.
This is America. Land of the free. Home to the nice white male American terrorist. This shit is embarrassing.
Maybe now someone will realize this is an American problem. Just like our cries for Black lives to matter didn’t begin with George Floyd, the targeting of Asian American’s didn’t begin with the pandemic.
This is America. And Racism is America’s Love Language.
You wanted ALL lives to matter? Well then pull up.
Asian lives are all lives.
Black lives are all lives.
Queer lives are all lives.
Children’s lives are all lives.
Latin X lives are all lives.
Woman’s lives are all lives.
American lives are all lives.
Things need to change. And I know how up in arms some of you get about hashtags and movements, but luckily, our Asian American friends made it easy for you. Stop. Asian. Hate.
That’s all we need to do. Stand up for people. Speak up for people. Check-in on people. For a year you’ve been “listening and learning” with the Black community, well put that research to good use Mary Jo. This is a perfect time to show solidarity. To practice what you preach and put on display your action and ally ship. Oh, but don’t stop there, do your Googles. Asia is a big place and many of you still don’t get that. There is a long history of discrimination, equalization, and racism in the AAPI community. At the end of the day, one should be targeted because of the color of their skin, no one. And absolutely no one, gets to take another person’s life because of their bad day.
This is America: Land of the free and home of the brave. BUT only if we are ALL truly free. So it's time to be brave. Open your hearts to those who look different than you. Open your mind to their hearing them and understanding where they are coming from. But most importantly open your eyes. There is still so much work to do...
