What is Justice?

A friendly reminder that JUSTICE and ACCOUNTABILITY are NOT synonyms and should not be confused or used interchangeably.

Justice is the morally fair and right state of everything. To have justice as a person's character trait means that they are just and treat everyone the same, or how they would like to be treated.

Accountability is when an individual or department experiences consequences for their performance or actions. Accountability is essential for an organization and for society. Without it, it is difficult to get people to assume ownership of their own actions because they believe they will not face any consequences.

Today's guilty verdict is a small step in holding Derek Chauvin accountable for his terrible actions. He made a horrible decision that cost a man his life. No, all cops aren't bad. But often, those in law enforcement who behave badly are hardly held accountable for their actions. And that is why today is so important. No one should be above the law or protected by it unfairly.

Respect for the badge also must include respect for the lives the badge is meant to protect and serve.

May this be a reminder that no JOB should be more important than a LIFE. No matter how flawed or imperfect that life may be to you.

There is no REAL justice when a life is lost.

To my non-Black folks. Wake up and understand what you are just now seeing is not new, just new to YOU. I hope you learned something. I hope it sits with you and makes you uncomfortable. I hope you learn to see the complexity in our differences instead of trying to erase our stories. Our reality. I hope you thank your lucky stars that it’s not you and take the privilege you feel in that moment to do the right thing.

And to my people… I love us for real. May Black folks feel comfort in knowing the fight is not over, but at this moment, a life that looked like ours mattered. Surround yourself with positive vibes and good energy. Take in the day however you need to. Be happy. Be sad. Feel upset. Feel all the feels. Feel for all the black bodies we have lost that will never receive the justice they deserved. Know there is more to do. Know that I see and love you and we owe no one anything. Cry. Smile. Breathe. Find peace in the small victories.

He deserved better. We deserve better.

May George Floyd’s family find some peace in this storm.
