Black Girls and Gold Medal Mental Health
No Simone Biles slander will be tolerated here on this day. NONE.
Most of you can't follow through in taking the meat out of the freezer before dinner time, let alone the pressure she must feel. Especially from a world that seemingly only cares about you when you do what they want, how they want when they want.
It should go without saying but stop placing an unprecedented amount of pressure on Black women because you feel like our "strength " outweighs our humanity and mental health.
You love us until we are too loud.
You love us until we are tired.
You love us until we mess up.
You love us until we say no.
You love us until we truly decide to love ourselves.
The media coverage on this is already ugly. Filled mostly with comments by white women calling her a quitter and white men questioning her GOAT status in comparison to the likes of Brady and Kobe. But the truth is, Simone didn't have to come. Her status was solidified and will remain after these games. History doesnโt change because your mad Mary Sue.
But the obsession with Black women, our perfection, and your need to break us down is truly what's at play here. I know because it happens to me. Every. Single. Day. There's nothing people enjoy more than crucifying Black Women. We can never stumble, make a mistake, hell we can't even breathe the wrong way without it making national news. We are your everything until we are not.
Simply put; leave us alone.
Itโs all Team USA until the Black girl falls short.
Itโs all proud of her until she misses the mark.
Steps back. And doesn't deliver. But I forgot that black life doesn't matter when it's not getting gold medals?
MERICA! Am I right?
It's 2021, we are STILL living in an entire Paramount Plus (because the Delta Sigma Theta is whopping our ass) and our players are still outperforming most countries in their sleep after the year weโve had. This country's eyes have been open to so much and Team USA is still making it work. Mental Health is at the forefront of our think pieces, but do we REALLY care about mental health? Or do we only care when gold medals arenโt on the table? Do we really care about Women Athletes? OR is it only when we win? If you don't really care, then just say that Kevin. Say what you want about Simone, Naomi, etc, because you donโt know them. But know this, there are people in your life dealing with mental health that are watching how you react in these moments, so think twice.
We owe it to ourselves, our kids, and our nation to love the players just as much, if not MORE than the game. Sports are a beautiful thing. But so is a sound mind and open spirit. Why can't BOTH be placed on the pedestal? So, we can build great athletes both physically and mentally! HELLO!
And we owe respect and grace to Black Women. All Black Women. The famous ones and the ones you know in real life too. Love us fully, respect us as fully realized humans, stop waiting for us to save and stick up for you, acknowledge our mental health, see when we are tired, stop calling us strong so you can tear us down, stop using us, abusing us, and disrespecting us. Or leave us alone.
Serena. ShaCarri. Meghan. Naomi. Simone.
Our girl didn't have it this time and that's ok. But she is still a star. Still a leader. Still, a badass mega gymnast who changed the game forever. Your fave could literally NEVER.
Most people judging her can't even touch their damn toes let alone do a cartwheel properly. Shut up ugly. She still makes me proud. The team still made us proud. And those silver medals still shine brighter than the futures of most of you keyboard gangsters.
Argue with yourself. #GOAT #SimoneBiles
Signed a proud Black Girl.
